The Burger King Roundabout in Newbury can be a scary place for learners and experienced drivers. It is incredibly busy and visibility due to the trees in the central island makes it challenging! When going ahead at any roundabout the Highway Code is vague! read on to find out how to position correctly!
So the Highway Code says “When taking an intermediate exit approach in the most appropriate lane”. It does not specify what “intermediate” means however lets assume this means somewhere between the first and last exit. This is because sometimes there are multiple exits between the first and last exits and some may be on the left some might be on the right.
Think of a roundabout like a clock face:
⏰ Anything before 12 O'Clock is on the left.
⏰ Anything at 12 O'Clock is ahead.
⏰ Anything after 12 O'Clock is on the right.
At the Burger King roundabout from St Johns Road there are three lanes on approach without any lane arrows. So we assume the left lane is for the first exit, right lane for the third exit and the middle lane is for going ahead. When going ahead in the middle lane it is really important to leave enough space on the right side for a car to join the roundabout that is turning right. A good target is to aim for the bollard on the island shown in my video!
Never turn left from the right lane. The van driver here was lucky we did not accelerate otherwise we would have collided!
