With not enough full time examiners, local test capacity in the Newbury area is limited at the Greenham Driving Test Centre. Even at full operation, this restricts the number of weekly appointments available — and demand consistently exceeds supply.
What Do the Official Figures Say?
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) publishes official waiting time data showing that national averages have risen sharply since the pandemic. In many areas across the UK, waits now exceed 20 weeks.

BBC Investigation: Touts and Booking Bots
Availability has also been affected by third-party resellers using automated software.
A recent investigation by the BBC found that bots can secure newly released driving test slots within seconds, before genuine learners or instructors can book them. These slots are then resold at inflated prices.

The DVSA has acknowledged the issue and says it is working to prevent automated systems accessing the booking platform.
The Reality of Booking a Test
New test appointments are often released early in the week. Many instructors — including us — are logged into the DVSA system at 6:00am on Mondays attempting to secure dates.
In practice:
👉 The system regularly slows or crashes under demand
👉 Large numbers of slots disappear within seconds
👉 Securing a test locally can take multiple attempts
With not enough examiners at Greenham, competition for appointments is intense.
The Cost to Learners
Extended waiting times are increasing costs for candidates:
👉 Some learners must retake their theory test if it expires after two years.
👉 Longer gaps mean more lessons are required to remain test-ready.
👉 Overall spending is often significantly higher than before COVID-19.
Ultimate Driving Test Booking Support
To help our pupils, we offer a test booking support service:
👉 £20 administrative fee
👉 Subject to terms and conditions
👉 Tests are typically booked up to 24 weeks in advance
👉 We actively monitor release windows and attempt to secure appointments
Due to national demand and system limitations, specific dates and times cannot be guaranteed.
🤔 Final Thoughts
A 24-week wait is more than an inconvenience — it has real financial and practical consequences for learners in our area.
We will continue to support our pupils and monitor developments at Greenham closely.
